Micro-Chip my Dog? Why?
I would like all of the puppies I send away to be microchipped because it gives us a much better chance of being able to find a lost or stolen pet. All of my personal dogs are microchipped, and I (Your breeder) recommend you protect your dog.
I will insert the Microchip prior to delivery. It's easy, doesn't cost a lot and protects your pet. What else could you want?
What is companion animal microchipping all about? A microchip is a rice grain-sized transponder, on which a unique number is embedded. The microchip is inserted using a needle between the shoulder blades of dogs and cats, in a relatively painless procedure, which takes just seconds. We estimate that approximately 5% of dogs and cats in North America have been implanted with a microchip. Traditionally, pets have been microchipped for three reasons: By pet owners concerned that their dog or cat might become lost and, as a result, want to have something more than just a collar tag as a form of identification; By breeders wishing to maintain breed integrity and want something more than a tattoo; By shelters, who, want to improve the chances of lost pets being reunited and to help track those pets that are adopted should they at some future date re-enter the shelter community .
What makes a microchip system work properly?
There are three essential components to an effective microchip system: The microchip, or as it is sometimes referred to as the 'transponder' or 'RFID' technology which has a number embedded into it which can be read at a certain frequency; The reader, or as it is sometimes referred to as the 'scanner', which is generally a hand-held devise is used to read the number on the microchip which has been implanted in the dog or cat; The database network, where information about the pet owner and the pet can be stored or registered, in each case tied directly to the pet's microchip number. Microchips are a safe, permanent and painless way of protecting your pet for a lifetime. Microchips allow lost pets to be identified at shelters or veterinary clinics and greatly increase the chance that your pet will be returned to you quickly.
Why would I want to Micro-Chip my dog?
Well first off, for their protection. If little puppy runs away you call the chip maker and they will look for your puppy. It is a good source of information should your dog get stolen. . The AVID® Microchip identifies your animals with no hassle and no error. Your dog is free to perform and do his best. GENERAL Questions What is the AVID® microchip? A.V.I.D. stands for American Veterinary Identification Devices. The AVID® microchip is a tiny computer chip which has an identification number programmed into it. The chip is encased in a smooth, strong biocompatible glass, and is small enough to fit into a hypodermic needle. Once an animal is injected with the chip, he can be identified throughout his life by this one-of-a-kind number. His identification cannot be lost, altered or intentionally removed. How does the microchip work? The microchip is generally injected deeply under the skin. It sits safely there, totally inert. A special scanner is used to send a radio signal through the skin of the animal to read the chip. The animal feels nothing as the scanner is passed over him. The microchip sends it’s number back to the scanner. It appears in the viewing window as, for example, AVID 220*609*321.
How long does the microchip last?
The microchip has no power supply, battery, or moving parts. It is designed with an operating life of over 25 years and is guaranteed for the life of the animal. Once injected, the microchip is anchored in place as a thin layer of connective tissue forms around it. The chip requires no care. It does not pass through or out of the body. Can the microchip move around once inside the body of the animal? When properly implanted, a small layer of connective tissue forms around the microchip, preventing movement or migration of the chip. Instructions and injection sites will vary depending upon the specie. As with any brand of chip, AVID® microchips will not migrate if instructions are followed and implantation is correct.
What do you mean by the chips are "registered" to me upon purchase?
When you purchase AVID® microchips, the chip numbers that you have purchased are kept in the AVID databases and are able to be traced back to you. This is a service we provide for kennel and farm management, and it can be essential as a third party backup; as proof of chip purchase. This service is included in the cost of AVID chips. However, this is not a 24-hour recovery service for lost pets. Nor does it mean that we know which particular animal has a particular chip.
If the animal shelter picks up one of my animals, how do they know to call AVID®?
Animal shelters and animal control officers have been educated and informed about microchip identification and how it works. Shelters use industrywide, cross-compatible scanners that read all chips operating at a certain frequency. Once a microchip is located in an animal, the appropriate steps are taken. If the animal is registered with AVID's PetTrac™ Recovery System, the shelter will be given the owner's name. If the animal is not registered, they will be given the name of the veterinarian or the breeder who injected the microchip.
